October Social Justice Updates

by Kate McGaw, Social Justice Team Chair

September was another busy month for WUU.

  • We participated in the September 20th nationwide Women’s March with a rally at the courthouse in Williamsburg.

  • We engaged with the VICPP (Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy), who were our Share the Plate recipients last month. Also, through the VICPP we are rallying for 100% of our congregation to vote this November. John Whitley is our liaison with VICPP. Karen Siracusa is leading our 100% VOTE campaign with VICPP for the November 4 election. Remember, early voting began September 19. Our own Les Solomon once again was the first to vote in James City County.

  • Karen Siracusa engaged us with UU the Vote and a very successful postcard writing campaign.

  • We made the first steps in having a rainbow crosswalk on the entrance to our campus (watch this space for next month’s update!).

  • Members of the Rainbow ministry attended a Williamsburg PRIDE 2026 planning evening with Virginia Organizing and Williamsburg Baptist Church.

  • We continue to work with FISH, our local food and clothing pantry. This month we collected 30 bags of food.

Upcoming/Ongoing Williamsburg Community Events:

  • No Kings Rally October 18 at the JCC Courthouse. This is part of a nationwide demonstration (we will be making posters at WUU on Saturday, October 11th, during our fall cookout 12:00-3:30).

  • Freedom Fridays: noon at the JCC Courthouse

  • Moral Mondays: 11:30 -12:15 on DoG St

Important Dates:

  • Banned Books Week October 5-11

  • National Day of Coming Out October 11
