Earth Care Book Club Meets August 30
Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds & Shape Our Futures
By Merlin Sheldrake
August 30, 11:30 am—new date!
Little Sanctuary
On August 30, the Earth Care Book Club will be discussing Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds & Shape Our Worlds, by Merlin Sheldrake.
This book literally challenges our understanding of how the world is constructed. Did you know that “although fungi have long been lumped together with plants, they are actually more closely related to animals” (p. 9)? Scientists have found out amazing things about fungi over the last few decades and Sheldrake shares many of these in this fascinating book.
There are fungi that take over the minds (and bodies) of insects, directing them to climb to the top of the nearest plant, clasp the stem tightly, and die—thus providing a good way of dispersing the fungal spores. Zombies, anyone?
More than 90% of all plants depend on mycorrhizal fungi, which help them get nutrients and water; they are incredibly important to life on Earth. And, of course, they form the “Wood Wide Web” that we just recently learned about.
Come join us as we talk about how our minds were blown when we read this book! LOL.
As always, all are welcome, even if you haven’t had a chance to read (or finish) the book. We’d love your company! We hope to see you on August 30, after the service, in the Little Sanctuary.
