“KNOW BETTER, DO BETTER”

Maya Angelou famously said, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” The idea resonates in so many areas of life, including our relationship with the environment.

Over the years, we’ve learned an incredible amount about Earth, its natural systems, and our place in the biological family - the “interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.” As social human beings, we’ve learned that many of our “normal” practices are actually very harmful to the world around us, but what are those specific harmful practices and what can we do differently?

Come join us as we band together to learn about how to live more lightly on Earth as PART of the interdependent web of existence, exploring our options and putting them into action.

We’ve started the process with the Green Book Club and the WUU Arboretum group, both of which fall under the larger “Green Committee” umbrella. The plastics recycling logically fits under the umbrella, too.

Several of us are really excited about taking Doug Tallamy’s recommendations for Homegrown National Park and putting them to use on our WUU campus, as well as in our own yards, so this could be another project under the Green Committee umbrella. How do we actually implement Tallamy’s recommendations? What are the native plants we need to use and where do we find them? What are the non-native invasive plants in our area and…what’s the problem with them again? What do they look like? Do I have any in my yard?

If you’re interested in any of these projects (book club, arboretum, plastics recycling, Tallamy initiative) or if you have a different “green” project that you’d like to propose, please join us in our inaugural meeting on Sunday, October 12, at 11:30 a.m. in the Main Sanctuary.

If you have any questions, suggestions, or comments, please contact Cynthia Abbott (cynthabbott@yahoo.com) or Kim McHugh (kimberly3mcu@gmail.com). We hope to see you there!
