SYMBOLS

The congregation of Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists is rich in symbols and rituals.

As with many UUs, a central symbol is the chalice. The lighting of the chalice provides a way to focus inward as the service opens. It unites and inspires us to hope, to embrace all and to care for each other and the world through our vision and connectedness. We are a community bound by our principles and tied to the larger community of UU churches and fellowships.

Our banner was designed by the winner of a congregation-wide contest and was assembled by a team of loving members with nimble fingers. It reflects open hands lifting a flaming chalice against a backdrop of doves, the universal symbol of peace.

Our gong announces our assembly and our meditation-singing bowl, a gift to us from our extension minister, prepares us for our quiet time, a few moments every Sunday morning to reflect and contemplate.

Our talented artists have shared their gifts through unique creations.  The spiral, inspired by the nautilus shell and handcrafted of copper, represents our unending journey.  It is supported by an acrylic stand giving the impression of floating.

Every year on Charter Sunday, children and adults together place another peg in one of the spiral holes to celebrate our continuity and passing of our tradition to our next generation.  We now have 16 pegs marking our progress on this journey.
Our special pulpit built by our own carpenter to match our two donated chairs is dedicated to Trudi Gelsey, a beloved member now deceased.

Our granite obelisk close to the roadside announces our presence to the Williamsburg community.  We are here to stay – solid as rock.
