November 2007

“St Cecelia Sunday” ( Nov. 18th) By Rev. Jennifer Ryu, Co-minister  November 18 is our annual St.Cecilia Celebration of Music. This year the WUU Choir and chamber orchestra will be performing Franz Joseph Haydn's Te Deum. Haydn composed this work in Eisenstadt, Austria for the Empress Marie Therese (wife of Franz I) while in the employ of the Esterhazy family. This very cheerful piece, based on a traditional Latin text praising God, explores a wide palette of musical colors. There will also be an opportunity for the whole congregation to participate in another piece re-arranged specifically for WUU. (CD available in church Library)
Listen to  From the Heart (Nov 18th ) By Dr. Jamie Bartlett, Director of Music
“We Affirm the Goal of World Community” the Nov. 11 Sermon By Rev. Jennifer Ryu, Co-minister  Is the idea of world peace naïve? Is the UU goal of world peace, liberty and justice for all too idealistic and far-reaching? How do we hold in our hearts both the world's suffering and our hope for healing? Guest Musicians, “InCluesion” will join our congregation for an inspiring worship service full of music and images. We will be giving out the UUSC (The UU Service Committee) Guests at Our Table Boxes.
Listen to “Atheism: Faith without God” by Franz Gross Do you believe in God? Can one have faith without believing in God? What do atheists believe and why do they come to church? What can the WUUs offer to someone who does not believe in God? The answers may surprise you.

Listen to “Closeness and Otherness, Intimacy and Wound” by Rev. Preston Moore, Co-Minister
The people closest to us should be the ones with whom our relationships are most kind, gentle, and loving, right? But then why do we nod our heads in sad recognition when we hear those old songs that go “you always hurt the one you love”? This Sunday we look at intimate relationships and ask how we can best compose ourselves in these sacred spaces.

Listen to From The heart portion of the Oct 21 Service by Margaret Payne
Listen to  "Now is The Time" the Oct 14 Sermon by Rev. Jennifer Ryu, Co-Minister
UU Association Sunday President Bill Sinkford has just announced the launch of the first national marketing campaign for Unitarian Universalism in fifty years. Beginning in early October, as part of an effort to offer the good news of our faith to the larger world, the Unitarian Universalist Association will begin a partnership with Time Magazine. Have you heard the good news?
Listen to "From The Heart" portion of the Oct 14 Service by Chris Faia
Listen to  "The Heartmender" by Rev. Sue Sinnamon (mp3)Our life's journey encompasses distinct stages and challenges. Each of these four stages have their distinct pathways of Faith Development and Theologies. This morning we will reflect on the first stage, childhood, and the last stage, wisdom. Each has gifts for all our lives.

September 2007

"You Don't Have To Be Buddha" by Rev. Preston Moore Co-Minister (mp3)-- or even a Buddhist, to move down the life-altering path toward greater consciousness. This is the ground on which love, truth, compassion, and all of our most precious values must stand. As we begin our new church year, we reach out for this most profound of possibilities.
read "You Don't Have To Be Buddha" by Rev. Preston Moore Co-Minister (pdf)
"A Witnessing Community" by Rev. Jennifer Ryu Co-Minister (mp3)
We are a “Welcoming, Worshiping, Witnessing Community” Of those three words, perhaps “witnessing” is the least commonly understood among us. A Baby Dedication Ceremony will also take place during this service for Sophia Bunai.
read "A Witnessing Community" by Rev. Jennifer Ryu Co-Minister (pdf)
"Intersecting Faiths: The Story of Hagar" the Sept 16 Sermon by Rev. Jennifer Ryu Co-Minister (mp3) Islam, Christianity, and Judaism share the story of Abraham. One part of that story is often overlooked by all three traditions-the story of Hagar.
read "Intersecting Faiths: The Story of Hagar" the Sept 16 Sermon by Rev. Jennifer Ryu Co-Minister (pdf)

"Water Braiding Water:The Mythic River Flows on" the Sept 9 Sermon by Revs. Jennifer Ryu and Preston Moore (mp3)
It is time for Water Communion again. Is there something extraordinary about the reunion we celebrate with this symbol-laden ritual at the beginning of each new church year? Something deeper than simple pleasure of seeing good friends again after the scatterings of summer? Oh yes. Oh yes.

read "Water Braiding Water:The Mythic River Flows on" the Sept 9 Sermon by Revs. Jennifer Ryu and Preston Moore (pdf)
"Things Commonly Believed Among Us?" the Sept 2 Sermon by Rev. Preston Moore, Co-Minister (mp3)
Without the question mark, a long-ago Unitarian leader gave this name to an essay on what holds us together. Now, after over a century of similar efforts, our national leadership is at it again-this time, a revision of the UU Principles and Purposes. Why do we keep running around this track? Is something more profound at stake than the need for institutional cohesion?

Listen to "Mindfulness: Reflections from Plum Village" the August 26 Sermon by Rev. Jennifer Ryu, Co-Minister (mp3)

Listen to "Packed into Portland GA 2007" the August 19 Sermon by Sara Mackey, MDiv, Director of Faith Development (mp3)
The UUA General Assembly is a gathering of Unitarian Universalists from all over the country, worshipping, singing, and doing the sustaining work of our denomination. Dave Wilcox will join Sara Mackey in sharing stories of this year’s GA in Oregon.

Listen to "A Jesus Collage: Assembling a Portrait From Colorful Fragments" the August 12 Sermon by  Rev. David Tetrault  (mp3)
Rev. David Tetrault will be taking some of the suppositions of the Jesus Seminar and take them from academic interest through myth and belief into a place of faith.
Listen to "If it's Comfortable, It's Not Diversity" the August 5 sermon by  Sara Mackey, (mp3) DFD We have voted to become a Welcoming Congregation. That is not the end of the process, though. In fact, it’s the very earliest beginning. Where do we go from here?

July 2007

Listen to "Considering Prayer" the July 29th Sermon by  Sara Mackey, Director of Faith Development. (mp3) We may be unsettled by the word "prayer", but the practice itself often nourishes and sustains us, even when we name it by some other name. In this service we consider what aspects of our lives might be reasonably called praying, and what prayer does for us and for the world.
Listen to “Retail Religion:  Offering the Alternative.” the July 22 sermon by Rev. David Tetrault (mp3)
Listen to "Intimacy and Ultimacy: Small Group Ministry in Our Church"
the July 15 Sermon by  Sara Mackey, Director Of Faith Development
(mp3) Sara Mackey, our Director of Faith Development, is a trained small group ministry facilitator who was active in beginning the small group ministry program in her home church. Come and hear about how small group ministry works, why we do it, and what we can hope for as small group ministry participants.
read "Intimacy and Ultimacy: Small Group Ministry in Our Church" the July 15 Sermon by Sara Mackey, Director Of Faith Development (pdf)
Listen to "The Devil Came to Blacksburg:" The July 8 Sermon by  Preston Moore, Co-Minister (mp3)  And the Devil took the Hindmost. And the hindmost took thirty-two other souls with him into the fire. Where did the Devil come from? Who will banish him? Who will pursue these questions after the Pundit Cavalry has fired the usual blanks and galloped away?
read "The Devil Came to Blacksburg:" The July 8 Sermon by  Preston Moore, Co-Minister (pdf)
Listen to "Ringing Freedom" July 1 Sermon by Sara Mackey, Director of Faith Development (mp3)

Our independence is a cherished value of Unitarian Universalists. What are we free from? What are we free for? How does our freedom relate to our interdependence? How does our freedom call us to serve?

June 2007

Listen to  "Form, Freedom and Faith: The Improvised Life" the June 24 Sermon by  Rev. David Tetrault (mp3)
read  “The Manly Art of Surrender.” the June 17 Sermon by Rev. Preston Moore,  Co-Minister.(pdf) In the masculine world, resistance is often equated with strength, and vulnerability is often equated with weakness. If we look at surrender with religious eyes, how is it different? Come ponder this question, illuminated by masculine tales of power, piety, and intimacy—important for men and women alike.
Listen to "The Work Of The Soul." the June 10 Sermon by  Rev. Jennifer Ryu, Co-Minister (mp3)
When we do the work of the church, for whose benefit do we volunteer our time and talents? It is easy to think of church work as obligation, sacrifice, doing your fair share. But what if the whole point of the work is to inspire spiritual transformation of the people doing it? This is our aspiration for next year. Come find out how we have already sown these seeds.
Listen to "Reuniting Our Working and Worshiping Selves." the June 3 Sermon by  Rev. Preston Moore (mp3)
Is America's "church on Sunday, work on Monday" ethic a healthy separation of secular and religious spheres, or a part-time spiritually that leaves us leading un-integrated lives? How should we come to terms with the question of spiritually in the workplace?

Listen to "Flower Communion" the May 27th sermon by  Rev. Jennifer Ryu (mp3)
This annual ritual is uniquely Unitarian Universalist. Everyone brings one flower to the service, creating one large bouquet. The bouquet then becomes a symbol of our diversity and unity.

Listen to "How I Almost Did Not Become a Unitarian Universalist" the May 20 Sermon  by  Rev. Jeanne Pupke (mp3)
Senior Minister of UU Richmond shares the saga of her difficult struggle to find the religious home she thought was Unitarian Universalism. She asks some interesting questions about our "tribe" and what her difficulty says about our people, traditions and future.
Listen to  "Turning Away From Eden" The May 13 sermon by Co-Minister Rev. Preston Moore (mp3)
Come celebrate the heroisms and honor the tragedies of mothers, who live acutely in the paradox of holding close and letting go. Come for a deep theological embrace, instead of the usual holiday pieties.

April 2007

Listen to "Working At the Water's Edge: Toward a Reunion of Religion and Science" the April 22 sermon By Rev. Preston Moore (mp3) Religion and Science are fighting like cats and dogs these days. The fur is flying, in the form of shredded pages from polemical books by the true believers of both camps. What should we hope for? A brokered ceasefire? Or is there a deeper complementarity?

Listen to Intergenerational Sunday Easter Service Homily by Rev. Jennifer Ryu (mp3)

read "Death comes To The Archbishop" The Maundy Thursday Sermon Topic April 5 by Rev. Preston Moore Co-Minister. (pdf)
This is a short vespers worship service to mark "Maundy Thursday" the day before Good Friday. I am not a traditional Christian, but looking at this lesser-known piece of the Easter holidays from a modern perspective put the death of Jesus in an entirely new light for me. It just might do the same for you.

* listen to "Being White in America" the April 1 sermon By Rev. Jennifer Ryu Co-Minister. (mp3)
What does it mean to be a white person in America today? How do whites who care deeply for justice, equity and compassion legitimately do the work of dismantling racism? It starts with honest conversation; first with ourselves, then with others. There are stories waiting to be excavated; truths waiting to be told.

March 2007

* listen to "Justice: What's Love Got To Do With It?" the March 25 sermon By Rev. Preston Moore Co-Minister. (mp3)
On the day our movement declares to be Justice Sunday, we ponder the place of justice in our firmament of spiritual values. What does justice mean to a religious person- particularly one who calls herself a Unitarian Universalist? Anything special?

read "Justice: What's Love Got To Do With It?" the March 25 sermon By Rev. Preston Moore Co-Minister. (pdf)
* listen to "UUism on the Brink" the March 18  sermon By Rev. John T. Crestwell, Jr. (mp3)
What if you were a part of a religion that is becoming the religion of the present and future? Albert Einstein said, "The religion of the future will be a cosmic religion." In other words, this religion would utilize the best of science in its theology, while synthesizing ancient thoughts, thus creating a new religious paradigm in the world! Why did a leader in the Mormon Church say that Unitarian Universalism is "the most dangerous religion in America?" Come hear more from this guest preacher, Rev. John T. Crestwell, Jr., from Davies Memorial Unitarian Universalist Church. His church has been named a UUA Breakthrough Congregation and will be recognized at the UUA's General Assembly in June 2007 in Portland Oregon.
* listen to "SinWe Need It." the March 11 Sermon By Rev. Preston Moore (mp3))
Harsh religions have used "sin" to condemn and ostracize. This has made liberal religions leery of it. What are we losing by banishing this concept?

* listen to "Make A Brilliant Mistake" the March 4th sermon By Rev. Jennifer Ryu  (mp3)
There is an old Chassidic tale about a man who follows a dream then realizes that it was a big mistake.  Rev. Jennifer Ryu did the same thing.  How did these big mistakes become “brilliant” mistakes?  Are you making mistakes today that may turn out to be brilliant tomorrow?  And what does any of this have to do with living a good life?

February 2007

* listen to "Oh Lord, Won't You Buy Me A Mercedes-Benz?" the Feb 18 Sermon by Rev. Preston Moore (mp3)
Do you find prayer absurd? Baffling? Pointless? Look again. Ask, and it shall be given unto you. Really.

Do you find prayer absurd? Baffling? Pointless? Look again. Ask, and it shall be given unto you. Really.
* listen to "Love In The Palm Of Your Hand" the February 11th sermon by David Hamilton  (mp3) In an ocean of romantic stereotypes and superficial exhortations about love, we live amidst hard truths. The best love we can give may not be enough. There is a mismatch between what people need from each other and what they are capable of giving. Yet if we are fortunate, our ability and capacity to love grows with age and experience. If we can do no great things, we can do small things with great love. This will be a guided tour of love beyond the stereotypes to the nitty-gritty.
read "Love In The Palm Of Your Hand" the February 11th sermon by David Hamilton (text)
* listen to "WUU Charter Sunday and New Member Recognition" by Rev. Jennifer Ryu (mp3)A celebration to honor our founders and formally welcome our newest members. We remember those who went before us and reflect how communities are changed by the people who join them. What is the role of tradition in a religion that prides itself on not being restricted by tradition?

January 2007

* listen to "Going Out of Our Minds and Coming to Our Senses" the Jan28 sermon by Rev. Preston Moore  (mp3) Chesterson said "The insane are not those who have lost their reason, but rather those who have lost everything but their reason." Are we too rational? If we are, does that mean we're not religious?

read "Going Out of Our Minds and Coming to Our Senses" the Jan28 sermon
by
Rev. Preston Moore  (text)

* listen to "Joy and Woe Are Woven Fine" the Jan 21 sermon by Dr. Stephen Atkinson (mp3) Despite our hope for undiluted happiness, life inevitably brings both gladness and sorrow, often simultaneously.  How do we find meaning in this?  Is it possible to embrace both joy and woe?

* listen to "What Will Save Us From Redemptive Violence?" the Jan 14 sermon
by Rev. Jennifer Ryu
(mp3) No one thinks of violence as redeeming. Yet if we look at our actions, as individuals and as a society, we can see all kinds of way in which we justify the use of violence.

* listen to "Our Uncomfortable Seats at the Head of the Class." the Jan 7 sermon by Rev. Preston Moore (mp3)
Even as we criticize them, what is our complicity in social structures that perpetuate economic injustice? And honestly now, can you really be poor and be a Unitarian Universalist? On question of class, is our theology showing?

December 2006

* listen to "Janus: The God of Our Passages and Our New Year's Resolutions." the Dec. 31 Sermon by Rev David Tetrault (mp3)
Janus is the mythological deity with two faces placed over ancient doorways. January bears his name. But he can't see us when were stuck at a threshold. He never looks down. Now what do we do?
* listen to "O Little Town Of Nazareth" the Dec 24 Sermon by Rev. Jennifer Ryu and Rev. Preston Moore, Co-Ministers (mp3)
Many UUs love Christmas but they have trouble with the Jesus they see portrayed in fundamentalist Christianity. On the holiday of his birth, can we embrace a story of Jesus that is meaningful from our UU perspective?
read "O Little Town Of Nazareth" the Dec 24 Sermon by Rev. Jennifer Ryu and Rev. Preston Moore, Co-Ministers (pdf)

* listen to "Deeper into Welcoming Waters" the Dec 17 sermon by Rev. Jennifer Ryu and Rev. Preston Moore, Co-Ministers (mp3) We all value diversity because it is the right thing to do. But what is in it for us? When we venture out beyond familiar waters, we can experience profound spiritual growth. What will push us out of our comfort zone into these depths?

* Listen to "Evidence of Things Not Seen" the Dec 12 sermon by Rev. Preston Moore, Co-Minister (mp3)
The word faith does not appear anywhere in our seven UU Principles or the six sources of Our Living Tradition; and yet we often call ourselves a faith community. We are skeptical of deeds done on the basis of blind faith, and yet we would not call ourselves faithless. We are wary of wrapping our arms to tightly around faith, and yet troubled at the idea of pushing it away. Come look upon these dilemmas with new eyes.

read "Evidence of Things Not Seen" the Dec 12 sermon by Rev. Preston Moore, Co-Minister (pdf)

*Listen to "Seekers After Truth" the Dec 3 sermon by  Rev. Jennifer Ryu, Co-Minister (mp3)
Do we seek truth in order to find an answer?  Or can we find greater meaning in not knowing, but continually seeking?  This Sunday's topic will be discussed further at Monday's 'Faith in the Conversation' session.

November 2006

Listen to "Revisiting Advent: Nov. 26 Sermon A Harvest of Darkness" by Rev. David Tetrault (mp3)
Advent, the weeks before Christmas, is rooted in the more ancient practice of awaiting the Winter Solstice. Advent invites us to step away from the seasonal mayhem and examine once again our own primitive fears in the face of uncertainty.

* listen to “Promises, Promises”  the November 12 sermon by   Rev. Preston Moore Co-Minister (mp3)
When we give our spiritual word, we act in a way that has spiritual consequences. What do these sometimes ordinary, sometimes heroic utterances called promises represent in the life of a person of faith? We answer this question in words and in the music of the Jazz Band, punctuated by a surprise vocalist contributor.

For many people, speaking from their depths does not come easily, even with their most intimate partners and spouses.  How do we deepen our relationships with one another through the practice of engaged conversation?

* listen to  "Coming Home" Oct 15 Sermon by Sara Mackey, Director of Religious Education (mp3)

One of the best known stories in the Christian sacred text is about the young man who leaves home, makes mistakes, and comes back again. It is also the story of the older brother, who resents him. What stands in the way of our receiving what we want and need? How do we recognize ourselves in the story of the Prodigal Son?

* listen to "Declaring a Spiritual State of Emergency" Oct 8 Sermon by Rev. Preston Moore (mp3)

What brings us to church? Is there something urgent at stake in being here? Or instead is church more like one more interesting activity among many?

* listen to "One Hundred Fifty Conversations About God" Oct.1 Sermon by Rev. Jennifer Ryu (mp3)
On any given Sunday, there are at least 150 different notions about the nature of God swirling around the sanctuary. Rev. Ryu adds her voice to this symphony and asks the "God Question" in a different way.
