The Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists History
Chronology
1987

May:  Linda Lane-Hamilton and David Hamilton meet with Thomas Jefferson District Executive, Roger Comstock.  Roger suggests holding monthly potlucks and inviting friends who may be interested in Unitarian Universalism.

June – December:  A series of potlucks are held.  Roger meets with the fledgling group in August to encourage and advise.  On three occasions, a caravan of potential WUUs drives to local UU churches to experience worship services.

1988

January:  The group includes more than 40 people; a steering committee forms.

April 10:  The Williamsburg UUs hold their first public worship service at the Williamsburg Regional Library.  Roger Comstock is the guest speaker; 80 adults and 25 children attend the service.

September:  The WUUs begin holding worship services twice a month at the library.  Religious Education classes also begin meeting.

1989

February 5:  Charter Sunday is a day of celebration.  Ninety-nine people become charter members of the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists, a UUA record at the time.

May:  A WUU charter member finds a house and seven acres of land for sale at 3051 Ironbound Road, a perfect place to build a church, but the WUUs do not have the finances to buy real estate.   A number of WUUs form a group, separate from the church, and purchase the house and property.  They become known as the Ironbound Partners.

September 10:  The Reverend Roy Reynolds leads the first service of his three-year term as extension minister.

September 24:  Our first service is held at Clara Byrd Baker School, church home for the next six years.  Summer services are held bi-weekly at Temple Beth El.

October:  WUUs rent the house and seven acres of land at 3051 Ironbound Road from the Ironbound Partners.

1990

August:   A long-range planning committee, later called Home ‘95, starts the process of planning and building our church.

September – December:  Through a series of potlucks and cottage meetings, the congregation develops and writes our covenant.
